Santa, Heaven, and Diabetes

It was about 8:30 one night after Christmas.  Sweets was just getting ready for bed after enjoying a later-than-usual bedtime thanks to Winter Break.

We were up in her room.  Surrounded by pink and purple and butterflies and princesses.

"Mom, is there a Santa in Heaven?"

"Uhhhh.....   Well....  No.  I don't think there is a Santa in Heaven."

"WHAT?!?  Then how does everyone get their presents?!?"

"Well, I don't think you get presents in Heaven.  When you go to Heaven, you are living with God.  And God gives you everything you could possibly ever want.  So there's no need for presents.  Because you already have everything."

"Oh.  Ok."

She resumes buttoning up her Hello Kitty pajamas.

"So.... Heaven.  That's the place where you get new eyes.  Right?"

"New eyes?  Do you mean that when you go to Heaven God will heal you.  Like how Mommy and Daddy wear glasses here but in Heaven our eyes will be perfect and we won't need glasses anymore?"

"Yeah.  New eyes."

"Well, yes.  That's true.  How did you know about that?"

"Daddy told me."

I watch her as she takes off her Dexie pouch.  She lays her pouch on her dressing table.  Ready to be worn again the next day.  She takes Dexie out of the pouch and places him in her bed.  Snuggled up next to her teddy bear and unicorn and blankie.

"Do you know what else God heals in Heaven?"  I ask her.

"No.  What?"

"God will heal your diabetes.  When you go to Heaven, you won't have diabetes anymore."

"WHAT?!?  Are you kidding me?  No more diabetes?!?"

"Nope.  No more diabetes.  Just like new eyes.  In Heaven there won't be diabetes."

"Wow....."  Her eyes are as big as saucers as a look of wonder and excitement cross her face.

"Mom, if I don't have diabetes in Heaven but then I come back - I'll have diabetes again.  Right?"

"Well...  as far as I know you don't really come back from Heaven once you get there.  But when you're here.... when you're alive...  You have diabetes.  Unless someone finds a cure."

She crawls into bed and looks up at me with those big, blue eyes.

"I sure hope they find a cure before I die."

"Yes, baby.  I hope so, too.  I hope so, too."

  1. When Kortnie was first dx'd she'd ask me, "am I gonna have this until I die?" I'd tell her, "yep you'll have it for the rest of your life" But I hate when she asks me that, because I don't want her to think about dying. I hope there is a cure in their lifetime too. Sweet babies.
